The New York Apartment
The New York Apartment
This beautiful 38th floor, 2,000 square foot apartment in Manhattan in situated within the prestigious Bloomberg Tower designed by Cèsar Pelli. The views of Central Park and New York City are simply breath-taking so the client requirement was to maximise this striking feature whilst creating a unique, luxurious, contemporary and comfortable second home for her family and friends to enjoy.
Most of our design focusses around the clients wish to enhance the special feeling of being amongst the clouds and in the sky. In all areas where there were glass wall windows, we worked to create a fluidity and seamlessness which worked in harmony with the surrounding vista. The use of glass furniture and fittings provides uninterrupted views of the surrounding skyscrapers and the park below. The scheme has taken the tones from the sky and injected them throughout with blues, light greys and whites which also serve to heighten the natural light that pours in. The kitchen had two entrances so one of these was opened up to create an increased fluidity.
We researched local designers and studios to give the ‘New York’ touch to the scheme using pieces from world renowned designers to younger design studios, mixing contemporary sleek design and mid-century pieces, lots of bespoke furniture and digital art installations and latest technology. Amongst all the eye-catching elements is the surprise of a hammock by a New York artist suspended by a glass wall! This provided a fantastic wow factor to the apartment and was also one of the biggest technical design challenges we faced. We needed to ensure safety for the surrounding furniture and of course any exaggerated swinging needed to be avoided near the window. Therefore this fabulous hammock which was literally suspended within the clouds needed to be accommodated both structurally and spatially with some innovation.
In the internal areas with less light such as the entrance foyer and bathrooms, we explored more graphic elements to address the clients wish for individuality and contemporary design. The wallpapers and rugs demonstrate geometric patterns and a dramatic orange accent was carried throughout giving a lovely contrast and balance to the other spaces.
